Learn how to rescue Grand Duke Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3 (bg3). Navigate challenges, save hostages, and make crucial choices. Available on PC, PS5, and Xbox.

In the game Baldur’s Gate 3, players discover that Duke Ravengard (Grand Duke bg3) has disappeared during Act 1. However, they won’t be able to find him until Act 3.

In Act 1, players can rescue Counselor Florrick from a place called Waukeen’s Rest, which is burning. Counselor Florrick informs them that Grand Duke (bg3) Ravengard, who is Wyll’s father, has been taken by a group called the Absolutist cultists. Unfortunately, players won’t be able to find Ravengard in Act 1. They need to continue playing until Act 2 to locate him.

Interestingly, during Act 2, players cannot rescue Ravengard, even though they have the opportunity to save other characters like tieflings, deep gnomes, and Zevlor from the True Soul group. The real chance to rescue Ravengard only comes in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. This is when players finally have the opportunity to free him and bring him back to their base.

Duke Ravengard’s Location in Act 2

If Counselor Florrick survives Act 1, players will find her at the Last Light Inn in an area known as the Shadow-Cursed Lands. She gives the player’s party a task to rescue the Grand Duke. She managed to trace the captors to a place called Moonrise Towers. However, when players look, they won’t find Ravengard imprisoned in the tower. Unlike Zevlor, he also isn’t in the pods in the Mind Flayer Colony beneath it.

Instead, players first hear about Duke Ravengard when they overhear a conversation among the champions of the Dead Three. This occurs towards the end of the Mind Flayer Colony area, right before the second and third parts of the battle against the Ketheric Thorm boss. Ravengard and the other two champions leave before the fight starts, so players won’t see him again until Act 3.

Wyll’s Choice and Mizora’s Pact

When the party encounters Grand Duke Ravengard again, he’s making a surprising proclamation. He declares Gortash as the new Archduke of Baldur’s Gate, a position that Gortash created to gain control over the city. Although Ravengard is alive and seemingly well, he’s deeply influenced by a force known as the Absolute. This significant moment unfolds as players reach Wyrm’s Rock Fortress for the first time.

If Wyll is part of the party, players might notice Mizora present on the prison’s main level. After conversing with Gortash and Ravengard upstairs and returning, Mizora initiates a conversation with the party. She reveals that Gortash has already sent Ravengard to a concealed location, and she holds the knowledge of his whereabouts.

The conversation extends when players return to their camp at the end of the day. Mizora, along with two witnesses, appears with a specific goal. She aims to either renew or strengthen Wyll’s pact as a Warlock with her. In return, Mizora offers Wyll information about Duke Ravengard’s location, aiding in the effort to rescue his father.

Declining her offer results in her guaranteeing Ravengard’s demise. Players should note that they won’t have a second chance to end Wyll’s pact, and Ravengard’s survival isn’t as assured as she implies. Nevertheless, having Mizora’s assistance significantly simplifies the process of freeing Ravengard.

Note: It’s important to remember that players must settle Wyll’s contract before attempting to rescue Duke Ravengard. If the party reaches Ravengard’s prison without consulting Mizora, he’ll already be deceased. Interestingly, this implies that overlooking Mizora’s involvement increases the likelihood of Ravengard’s demise more than refusing her proposal.

Where is the Grand Duke (bg3)

After Gortash takes on the role of Archduke, players will discover that Grand Duke Ravengard is held captive in an underwater prison. However, reaching him is no simple task, and it’s closely tied to the Steel Watchers quest. If you aim to maintain Lord Gortash’s support, it’s wise not to attempt Duke Ravengard’s rescue.

For those who choose to proceed, the journey begins at a place called Flymm Cargo Warehouse. This warehouse can be found to the south of the Blushing Mermaid and across the water from the Grey Harbor Docks waypoint.

Although the door is locked and off-limits, players can evade notice by leaping onto the warehouse’s roof and then descending to the door on the southern side of the building. This door is also locked, but the party can discreetly pick the lock or break it without being seen.

Inside the warehouse, players will encounter wargs, which are large wolf-like creatures that attack on sight. Fortunately, these wargs lack spells or ranged attacks, making them manageable at this stage of the game.

Once the wargs are defeated, proceed to the northwest corner of the warehouse. Here, a hatch is concealed beneath boxes and crates, leading to an underground prison. The city sewers also contain a greasy slide that leads to this area. Crossing the chamber will reveal a hidden submersible bay.

Redhammer the Deviser serves as the captain of the submersible. Players have the option to use Intimidation or Deception to prompt them to discuss the Iron Throne, which is the underwater prison where Gortash holds Ravengard and a group of Gondian hostages.

Using Intimidation, Persuasion, or Deception, players can convince Redhammer to take the party down to the prison. The choice of skill matters, with a Persuasion check against a difficulty of 10 and a Deception check against a difficulty of 25.

How to Free Duke Ravengard

As the party steers the submersible toward the Iron Throne, Gortash sends a warning to stay away. Despite lacking a hidden entrance, players should proceed anyway. Gortash triggers explosives in the underwater prison. When the party arrives, they have only six rounds to rescue prisoners before sahuagin invaders storm the base.

Duke Ravengard is confined in the central cell within the room east of the docking site. Like other cells, players can open it using a lever next to the door. This action doesn’t take a turn. Swiftly eliminate the sahuagin blocking the way and use all actions to dash.

Once Ravengard is freed, he becomes a controllable party member. Players guide his actions, but they can’t manage his equipment or give him potions, posing a challenge due to his mere 29 hit points. The following events depend on Wyll’s contract renewal.

If renewed, Mizora enhances Ravengard’s defense and speed. If not, she summons six “Combustion Belly Spiderlings” that charge at Ravengard and explode. A party member can eliminate them before they reach him, ensuring his safety.

Efforts to rescue hostages should also be prioritized. Particularly, a room west of the entrance holds two groups of three prisoners, while another room with sahuagin has one prisoner on the far end.

Should at least one party member stand at the base of the ladder to the submersible (not necessarily inside), the game continues. However, those within the base when it detonates wash ashore as corpses. Survivors can revive party members, but Gondians (and Duke Ravengard) remain permanently deceased. If Ravengard survives, he reunites tensely with his son at the party camp.

Notably, Baldur’s Gate 3 is accessible on PC, with a PS5 version releasing on September 6. Meanwhile, development is underway for an Xbox Series X/S version.
